Broadview honors firefighters for on-scene resuscitation and swears in new deputy fire chief

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson and public-safety leaders on Tuesday recognized Broadview firefighters and paramedics who responded to a Dec. 7, 2025 cardiac arrest call and helped restore a pulse before transporting the patient to Loyola University Medical Center.
"The training, professionalism, and decisive actions of our Broadview firefighters and paramedics made a huge difference," Fire Chief Martin said, and he named the ambulance and engine crews involved: firefighter Gianni Del Torrio, firefighter Duncan Lanzarote, Captain Pat McGivney, Lieutenant Dave Cohen, firefighter Robert Littel and firefighter Ryan Lee. Chief Martin said the patient was treated and released and was present at the board meeting.
Later in the evening Chief Martin introduced Carl Reyna, the board’s appointee as deputy fire chief. Chief Martin said Reyna brings 27 years of fire service, most recently as a deputy chief with the Berwyn Fire Department, and described Reyna’s operational and administrative experience. Reyna repeated the oath of office administered by Clerk Clark and trustees offered congratulations.
Mayor Thompson praised the crews and thanked the department for its work during recent protests and other events. Trustee Shelby called the moment "a blessing," and other trustees offered personal thanks and good wishes to the award recipients and to Deputy Chief Reyna.
The swearing-in was a ceremonial action following the board’s earlier consent-agenda approval of Reyna’s appointment. No separate vote was recorded at the swearing-in beyond the formal oath of office.
