Raleigh County commissioners authorized the IT/GIS remodel project on March 19 with an estimated probable cost of roughly $2,071,990.
Public Works described two generator options: a smaller system sized to back up IT servers and the elections office (recommended option) and a larger 250-kilowatt generator to back up the whole building. The full-building option would increase generator weight and require additional structural reinforcement and design work and raised cost estimates of roughly $2.4 million. The smaller scope would primarily support servers, critical elections functions and limited HVAC/lighting in key areas.
Commissioners discussed rooftop placement, existing structural anchors where an older cooling tower once sat, and the need to confirm any reinforcement required. Staff noted the project funding would come from CIP funds and that commissioners had previously approved $800,000 for CIP. The board moved to approve the remodel project (IT/elections backup) and directed staff and design teams to proceed to finished design and bid documents.
Staff said the project includes layout work for IT/GIS offices, the server room and shared kitchenette space, and that more detailed CIP amendments would be presented as needed.
