Swampscott School Committee votes to create naming-rights committee to set policy for donations and dedications

Following a tribute to outgoing member Suzanne Wright, who was praised for leading the Swansgate Elementary School project, the School Committee voted unanimously April 30 to create a naming-rights committee to develop guidelines for donor recognitions and to clarify what the district may accept.
Member Miguel Contreras moved to create the committee; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Chair Glenn Pastor described the proposed makeup as two school committee members, two public members (including, if she wishes, Suzanne Wright), and a superintendent designee or an appropriate principal. Pastor said the group’s purpose is to ‘‘wrap our hands around what we can and cannot do’’ and to avoid ad hoc or perpetual dedications tied to small donations.
The motion passed without recorded opposition. The chair said he would propose names within a week so the superintendent’s office can vet potential participants and the committee can draft language that aligns with existing school-district rules and municipal requirements.
The committee did not adopt a formal policy at the meeting; members agreed the naming-rights committee will examine legal and procedural limits and return recommendations for the board’s review.
