Commission approves a slate of hires and administrative items including Brooks Hill lease extension
Summary
Upshur County approved several personnel actions — hires for court security, community corrections, parks, and seasonal groundskeeping — and authorized a lease extension for the Brooks Hill Community Building and an employer verification renewal with Inspira Financial.
The Upshur County Commission on April 23 approved multiple personnel and administrative actions across departments.
Personnel approvals included: hiring John Slaughter as a fill-in court security officer for the Sheriff’s Office effective April 23, 2026; hiring Michael Mailloux as a part-time case aide for the 18th Judicial Circuit Community Corrections program (up to 19.5 hours per week, pending background check); hiring Rena J. Zirkle as Buckhannon-Upshur Recreational Park Facilities Director, with limited training beginning May 3 and full-time seasonal employment from May 17 to Aug. 8, 2026 (unless extended by the commission); and hiring Daryl Boyles as a seasonal part-time groundskeeper (no more than 29.5 hours per week) beginning May 3, 2026, pending background results. The Commission also approved the appointment of Heather Bailey as a CERT volunteer at the request of Tammy Strong, CERT Manager.
Administrative approvals included authorization for the Commission President to sign an Employer Renewal Verification Checklist with Inspira Financial and approval to execute a lease-extension agreement among the Upshur County Commission, the James W. Curry Advisory Board, and the Trustees of the Brooks Hill Community Building through Dec. 31, 2026. Assistant County Administrator Cindy M. Hughes noted the lease extension continues the existing agreement.
Each personnel and administrative item was approved by motion during the meeting; where noted, hires remain contingent on background checks and some seasonal employment is time-limited pending possible extension by the commission.
