Wayne County supervisors set FY27 pay, approve sheriff salary of $101,500 and authorize opioid-funded grant

On Jan. 6 the Wayne County Board of Supervisors approved Resolution 26-19 setting FY27 salary increases for elected officials (3% for most offices) and a sheriff salary of $101,500, and approved a $4,303 opioid-funded allocation to a local Family Crisis Center and an appointment to the New Venture Waiver Home Director post.
The Wayne County Board of Supervisors voted Jan. 6 to set fiscal year 2027 salary increases for elected officials and to fix the county sheriff's pay at $101,500.
Lance Lange, a county supervisor, moved to approve a 3% raise for supervisors, the county attorney, the auditor, recorder and treasurer and to set the sheriff's salary at $101,500; Todd Wilson seconded the motion. Board Chair Chris Moore voted "nay," but the motion carried and the action was recorded as Resolution 26-19.
The vote follows a Compensation Board recommendation reported to supervisors that had proposed larger percentage increases (supervisors 4.86% and sheriff 15.29%). During the meeting the board referenced Senate File 2442 Division V and Iowa Code Sections 331.905 and 331.907 in explaining its authority to set salaries after the Compensation Board was dissolved.
The salary resolution includes the following FY27 figures as approved in the minutes: supervisors $36,473.06 (3% increase), county attorney $64,001.10 (3%), auditor $68,850.74 (3%), recorder $68,850.74 (3%), sheriff $101,500 (set amount), and treasurer $68,850.74 (3%). The minutes identify the action as Resolution 26-19.
The board also approved a $4,303 allocation to the Family Crisis Center to be paid from county opioid-settlement funds and appointed Mendy Middlebrook as New Venture Waiver Home Director. The appointment specifies a split work week for Middlebrook: 16 hours to New Venture, 16 hours to General Relief and 8 hours to Veterans Affairs. Supervisors also approved public health staff to code five hours per person to New Venture for the billing process.
County Engineer Dillon Davenport reported routine infrastructure updates: a culvert replacement on Cedar Road northeast of Lineville is complete except for spring seeding; the culvert crew will move to Ohio Road northeast of Corydon; two concrete-overlay contracts north of Seymour and a county-wide central line striping project had no new updates; and the 25th Street bridge project is progressing slowly.
Auditor Michelle Dooley recorded vendor claims totaling $54,592.96 for payment, listing vendors for road materials, equipment parts and professional services.
During public comment, attendee Don Seams said many residents are struggling to keep their homes amid property tax increases. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Jan. 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Wayne County Courthouse Lower-Level Conference Room and adjourned at 10:56 a.m.
The minutes show motions approving routine agenda items, minutes, payroll and the claim set; where votes were not recorded individually the minutes state motions were approved unanimously unless noted otherwise.
