Council recognized September 2017 as National Preparedness Month. John Valencia, executive director of the city’s Office of Homeland Security, thanked partner agencies and staff for emergency planning and continuity work. Charlene Zettle, interim CEO of the American Red Cross for San Diego, said the local Red Cross had deployed more than 90 people to Hurricanes Irma and Harvey and described the organization’s ability to open a shelter for 1,500 people within four hours. Fire Chief Brian Fennessy thanked partners and emphasized community preparedness for wildfires, earthquakes and other disasters.
The council also proclaimed Sept. 21, 2017 World Gratitude Day. Councilmember Ward and others welcomed representatives from the Human Relations Commission and community groups to accept the proclamation and spoke about gratitude, diversity and civic engagement.
The proclamations do not create binding policy but were positioned as a city recognition of local preparedness work and community initiatives.
