The Crossville Regional Planning Commission voted to endorse a staff presentation and alignment study for the proposed Interstate Drive extension (phases 2 and 3), offering nonbinding support for the project as presented.
City planner summarized the study prepared by an engineering firm, noting the extension is intended to provide an alternate route for local traffic and to relieve downtown and Interstate 40 congestion. The planner read traffic counts and projections: current AADT on the referenced Interstate segment was cited at about 49,027 vehicles per day; 2035 projections without the bypass increase that figure to about 59,763, while the study projects a reduction to roughly 52,000 with the bypass. The planner said Highway 70 and East 1st Street also show measurable projected shifts in traffic with the bypass scenario.
Commissioners discussed the major thoroughfare plan, route alternatives (including grade and elevation constraints) and the long‑range nature of the work: staff said portions might be candidates for TDOT participation over the next 20–40 years. The planner disclosed owning property north of the interstate and noted that could create a perceived conflict; the disclosure was recorded in the meeting.
A commissioner moved to support the roadway extension project as presented; following a second, the commission voted in favor by voice vote. The endorsement is advisory and will be forwarded to City Council; any design, funding or right‑of‑way actions will require additional study, approvals and potential coordination with TDOT.
