Commissioners approve $1,000 for Pancho Claus after organizer says event drew 1,200 last year

Sanaida Auerro Reyes, president of Fiesta Deliano, told the Lubbock County Commissioners Court on Nov. 24 that Pancho Claus—an event the organization runs each December—drew a record crowd last year and needs county help to meet expected demand this year.
"Last year we had a record number of 1,200 in attendance. We ran out of toys to give to the children that were present," Reyes said, and asked the court to provide $1,000 from funds authorized under Section 74.601 and Section 381.004 of the Texas Local Government Code to help purchase fruit and toys.
Commissioners discussed the event’s timing and whether the county could get funds processed in time for the Dec. 6 event. County staff noted that vendor-status and procurement timing would speed payment for an approved vendor. After a motion by Commissioner Shaw and a second by Commissioner Dolby, the court voted to allocate $1,000 to Fiesta Deliano for Pancho Claus.
Reyes said the organization’s budget for the event this year is about $6,000 and that the requested county funds would be used primarily to buy fruit and additional toys. Court members cautioned staff to comply with grant and vendor rules and to avoid spending beyond available funds.
The motion carried and organizers thanked the court; no roll-call vote tallies were read into the record.
