School district representative says proposed Algoma rezoning won’t touch Sheldon Nature Preserve

The district is asking the county to change the zoning on the parcel from A-2 (general agriculture) to B-3 (general business) to accommodate an expansion of the school at the site identified in the packet as 20 1225 North Oakwood Road. The committee did not take a final vote; Chair Howard Miller said the committee will make its decision at the deliberative meeting on Monday, March 9 at 7:30 a.m. in the County Administration Building and via Microsoft Teams.
"So the only portion that is rezoned is the southern parcel, which is to accommodate the school expansion… we are not requesting to rezone the Sheldon Nature Preserve parcel," Considine said. He told the committee the addition will extend north onto existing playground space, that the playground will be reconstructed to the west of the addition, and that the grassy ball field will remain.
Committee member Frank Faseno asked whether the school would be expanded toward the parking lot; Considine replied, "The school will not be expanding toward the parking lot. It'll actually be expanding further north on the site, almost onto the current playground space." Considine added that a traffic impact analysis recommended reconfiguring an on-site bottleneck to provide two lanes out to Amro Road.
Staff recorded written responses from some towns as part of the record. The transcript notes an emailed town response recorded on 02/18/2026 indicating approval; the meeting record uses several inconsistent spellings for one town’s name. Staff closed the item for the public hearing portion and the committee moved on to later agenda items.
The committee will consider the matter again at the March 9 deliberative meeting, when members will decide whether to approve the zoning map amendment. No formal motion or vote on this item was recorded during the hearing.
