Lubbock County approves MOU to provide mediation services for truancy at specialized school

County officials on March 9 authorized the county judge to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Betty M. Condress School for Education Innovation to address truancy cases through mediation involving parents, students and, where appropriate, school staff.
“This is a rather unique MOU. It’s the first one we’ve ever done with a school with specialized disabilities and so forth,” the presenter said, describing the planned mediation service and the need for special training.
Presenter Mr. Valentini told the court the county’s expected costs will be limited to training and administrative coordination; mediator fees will typically be paid by the parties involved or covered by grants. He said the arrangement could serve as a prototype for similar schools and that no county general revenue appropriation was expected.
The court moved to authorize the county judge to sign the memorandum; the motion passed on a voice vote. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the school’s status; the presenter said the school is licensed by the state and operates as an alternative school rather than as part of the local independent school district.
Officials said training will be provided by the county’s designated office and that attendance at that training will not require payment of personnel beyond usual duties. The court approved the MOU as presented.
