The New York City Council on April 30 adopted Resolution 3-96, declaring May 15 through June 15 Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month and designating June 7 as Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day.
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, sponsor of the resolution, described the condition and the stigma people with Tourette's face. "The CDC estimates that about 1,400,000 people in the U.S. have Tourette syndrome or persistent tic disorder," Williams said, adding that public education and awareness can reduce stigma and promote inclusion. Williams said he is believed to be the first person with Tourette's elected to public office in the country and urged education and compassion.
The resolution passed on a voice vote. Williams thanked advocates and the Tourette Association of America for their work and said recognizing the month would help reach families and schools with information.
Next steps: the designation is ceremonial; it signals city support for awareness activities and may be used to promote related educational events and outreach by city agencies and advocacy groups.
