Athletics participation climbs; district advances gym floor, bleachers and field upgrades

Summary
Easton School District officials reported 73% participation among eligible students, stronger high-school seasons, plans to add girls' wrestling, and progress on gym-floor replacement, bleacher installation (July 17) and athletic-field irrigation and scoreboard work.
Kyle, the district's ASB and athletics presenter, told the board that 73 percent of eligible students played a sport this year, a rise the district is proud of. "Seventy-three percent of kids who are eligible for a sport played a sport," Kyle said, and he highlighted successful seasons: varsity volleyball went 12-4 and girls basketball finished about 11-4.
Kyle and other board members discussed lower junior-high participation, particularly among girls, and plans to grow the pipeline by building interest at lower grades and adding offerings. Kyle said he is considering a girls' high-school wrestling program to offer another winter option for athletes who might not participate in basketball.
On facilities, the superintendent and facilities lead, Jeff, reported that asbestos testing for the gym returned clear and a new gym floor is scheduled for installation starting Monday, with a multi-week finish process including resin coating and line painting. "The air clearance came back. No asbestos in the gym," Jeff said. He also detailed a recommended waterproofing approach from Gifford Industries — laying a membrane up the wall rather than a floor-only treatment — and said the bleacher installation is scheduled to begin July 17, with an electrician contracted to provide three-phase power for the new seating.
The facilities report also covered athletic-field work: the scoreboard has been installed, irrigation valve placement has been moved off the playing surface, and staff are pursuing options to hardwire scoreboard power rather than relying on a generator. Jeff said hydroseeding and topsoil work are next so the district can host games next football season if momentum continues.
Board members and staff noted that ongoing operational costs (transportation, officials, game fees) require additional fundraising and creative budgeting; Kyle said district staff will continue to seek community donor support and explore grant opportunities to sustain program operations.
