Court approves routine minutes, funding for local events and grants; venue tax report and roads update given

Lubbock County Commissioners Court on Feb. 23 moved through routine business items, approved several funding requests and received financial and roads reports.
Minutes and financial items: The court approved minutes from its Feb. 9 meeting and authorized budget transfers of $117,620 and a budget amendment of $214,569 as presented by the auditor. The court also authorized payment of claims totaling $4,078,894.85 and accepted the county’s January unaudited financial report.
Community and event funding: The court approved $1,500 from unclaimed-fund monies for Foster A Life’s 2026 Kids Art Journey, a long-running program for foster and family-based children. Dr. Sean Kiel, who founded Foster A Life, described the program’s contests, prizes and outreach to children in 17 surrounding counties.
The court also approved $5,000 to support Wolfforth’s "Fourth on Fifth" event (a drone show and community programming). City representative Tara Tomlinson said last year’s drone show drew an estimated 30,000 attendees and organizers plan a longer program with more music and family activities this year.
Grants and contracts: The court authorized submission of a FY2027 VOCA victim-advocacy grant application and designated the county judge as the authorized official. Eddie Wharf of the district attorney’s office said state application language had changed since initial approval. The court also awarded ITB260102 elevator-maintenance services to Otis Elevator Company after receiving three bids.
Surplus auction and venue tax report: Purchasing staff outlined plans to auction surplus sheriff’s office items online (auctions beginning March 2 and March 16–30) and provided a bidding website. Jasmine Sanchez from the tax office reported venue/short-term rental collections for January (monthly collections $258,750.99; fiscal-year totals $4,620,141.55) and a venue-bank balance of $15,439,982.65 as of Jan. 30.
Private road and roads update: The court acknowledged a private road (Private Road 7320 in Precinct 1) for addressing purposes only and clarified the county assumes no maintenance obligation. Richard Wall of the roads department updated commissioners on staffing vacancies and open work orders for unpaved (20–36) and paved (38) roads plus roughly 95 fleet or routine-maintenance work orders.
