Erwin board accepts $1.35 million debris-removal bid, approves surveying work for South Industrial Drive; audit flags budget overruns

The Erwin Board of Mayor and Aldermen on March 24 approved two contracts and heard an annual audit that identified budget and oversight concerns.
The board voted unanimously to accept a debris-removal bid from DRC for $1,346,810. Vice Mayor James "Mickey" Hatcher moved to accept the bid and Alderwoman Angie Vaughn seconded; the roll-call vote listed Mayor Glenn White, Michael Baker, Gary Chandler, Vice Mayor Hatcher, Cathy Huskins and Vaughn voting aye.
The board also approved Task Order #1 with Thompson & Litton for engineering and surveying services to support reconstruction of South Industrial Drive. Vice Mayor Hatcher moved to approve the task order, Alderman Michael Baker seconded, and the motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
During a presentation of the town's annual audit, Curtis Morrison of Rodefer Moss reported two findings. First, the audit noted that the fire and police departments exceeded their budgets; the presentation did not specify amounts for each department. Second, the audit identified a lack of day-to-day oversight in the town library caused by understaffing that prevented adequate segregation of duties. The board did not take immediate action on the audit findings at the meeting; no follow-up assignments were recorded in the minutes.
Communications Director Valerie Bradley told the board that budget meetings for the upcoming fiscal year will be scheduled in late April or early May. Mayor Glenn White recognized Bradley for completing the Certified Public Manager Program through the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS).
Mayor White announced the next regular BMA meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 14, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The board adjourned the regular session and convened in executive session thereafter.
