Erwin residents press for temporary industrial-park access; board discusses school voucher bill and hears EMS update

Residents and business employees urged the Erwin Board of Mayor and Aldermen to expedite a temporary road in the South Industrial Park following Hurricane Helene, and the board discussed possible next steps while also addressing the proposed Tennessee Education Freedom Act.

Shane Tilson, an employee of Blue Linx whose worksite was affected by flooding, told the board he supports construction of a temporary road in the South Industrial Park to restore access while permanent repairs continue. Mayor Glenn White said the town is coordinating with consultants and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and asked Austin Finch with the Economic Development Board to follow up with an update. Alderwoman Angie Vaughn said she was “100% supportive” of completing the temporary repair as soon as possible.

On education policy, Alderman Michael Baker asked the board to adopt a resolution opposing the Tennessee Education Freedom Act of 2025 (a school voucher bill). Mayor Glenn White, who identified himself as an educator, said he personally does not support the bill and explained his concerns to the board. The record does not show a formal vote on a resolution at this meeting.

The board also heard a presentation from Jimmy Erwin, who provided an update on EMS staffing and personnel status. Anthony White raised a separate request about coordinating a job fair with Altec; Mayor White asked Town Recorder Tim Bailey to contact White to set a date and time.

The board set its next regular meeting for Feb. 10, 2025 and adjourned.
