Erwin board approves five ordinances, OKs special events; animal shelter update provided

The Town of Erwin Board of Mayor and Aldermen met on July 14, 2025, and approved five ordinances on second reading, granted two special-event permits and received an operational update on the Unicoi County Animal Shelter.
Vice Mayor James "Mickey" Hatcher moved to approve Ordinance No. 762-25, a budget amendment for the 2025–2026 fiscal year; Alderman Gary Chandler seconded. The board recorded ayes from Angie Vaughn, Cathy Huskins, Gary Chandler, James "Mickey" Hatcher and Mayor Glenn White; Michael Baker was absent. The motion carried.
The board also approved Ordinance No. 763-25 (Fishery Park Overlay), Ordinance No. 764-25 (Extension of Corridor Overlay), Ordinance No. 765-25 (Wells — 686 Vinton Ave Rezone) and Ordinance No. 766-25 (Tipton — N. Elm Ave Rezone). Motions and seconders were recorded for each item and roll-call votes were unanimous among present members; Michael Baker was noted absent on all votes.
Ryan Blankenship updated the board on the Unicoi County Animal Shelter, stating the shelter will move into a portable facility soon and that interviews for the director position are scheduled to begin Saturday, July 19, 2025. Blankenship later told the board he would arrange public-notice signs in rezoning areas and search for a new sign supplier after the previous supplier was decommissioned by flooding from Hurricane Helene.
Alderwoman Cathy Huskins moved, and Alderman Gary Chandler seconded, approval of a special-event request from Suzy Cloyd for music at the Gathering Place on Sept. 23 and Sept. 25, 2025; the motion passed with all ayes. The board also approved a request from RISE Erwin to hold a farmers market every Friday in August 2025 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Vice Mayor Hatcher requested that extra roadblocks be added on Aug. 22 to accommodate out-of-town visitors for the first home football game at Gentry Stadium.
Mayor Glenn White announced the board’s next regular meeting will be held on July 28, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
