Summary
Student organizers told the Borough Council they have expanded Unity Day into a townwide celebration, set for June 6, 3–6 p.m., at New Providence High School; the event will feature more than 20 booths, cultural performances and fundraising activities.
Student organizers from New Providence described the eighth annual Unity Day to the mayor and council on Monday, saying the event has grown from a small 2023 gathering into a larger, school-led celebration of diversity and belonging.
“We are honored to be here to present our eighth annual Unity Day, a celebration of the diversity, connection, and belonging that defines our community,” one student organizer said, describing plans to hold the event Saturday, June 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the New Providence High School gym. Organizers said the New Providence High School diversity club will play a central role in planning this year’s program.
The students said Unity Day will include hands-on activities and more than 20 booths run by school clubs (including the Diversity Club, Spanish Honor Society and Culinary Arts Organization) and local cultural groups such as the Huasat Chinese School and members of the Nepali community. The program will feature cultural demonstrations, a passport challenge for younger attendees and multiple performances; organizers said they have doubled attendance since 2023 and are running fundraising events — a bake sale and a clothing drive — to support the initiative.
Council members congratulated the students and said they look forward to attending. Two council liaisons to the borough diversity committee said they have followed the students’ work and will support the event on behalf of the council.
Organizers invited the borough and residents to attend; the presentation closed with council members thanking the students for their work and wishing them luck at the event.
