Summary
The De Pere Plan Commission voted to forward a proposal to rename Southbridge Road, part of Red Maple Road and Rockland Road to Generations Boulevard to the City Council, citing easier wayfinding and limited address impacts; staff said 24 properties could be affected with about 15 currently developed.
The De Pere Plan Commission voted April 27 to recommend that the City Council change the names of three connected road segments — Southbridge Road, part of Red Maple Road and Rockland Road — to Generations Boulevard, with the change to become effective Sept. 1, 2027 if council approves.
Planning staff told commissioners the single name is intended to improve GPS wayfinding and to tie business parks and both sides of the city together. "There are 24 properties that would be impacted by the street name change, and only about 15 are currently developed and using addresses on those properties," a planning staff member said.
Staff said temporary signage might go up earlier as construction progresses and that the town of Ledgeview and the Village of Greenleaf have been notified and are coordinating naming on their segments. The staff memo cites a prior selection of the name in 2023 under "Resolution 20 three-seventy," and recommends forwarding the naming ordinance to council for final action.
Commissioners praised the outreach and the timeline for giving residents and businesses lead time. Mayor Boyd said discussions with the county and local officials had been constructive and that the county had previously asked for a cleanup of the street names. Commissioners also discussed the bridge name tied to the corridor and clarified that corporate naming rights would not be sold; one commissioner noted the Green Bay Packers had been mentioned in that context and staff said the bridge would not be offered for corporate naming.
There was no public opposition during the commission meeting. After a motion and second, the commission approved forwarding the street-name change to City Council by voice vote. The item is scheduled for council consideration the following week; if the council approves, staff will implement the Sept. 1, 2027 effective date and continue outreach to affected property owners.
Next steps: the measure will be considered by the City Council next week; if approved, staff will notify affected property owners and coordinate signage with Ledgeview and other jurisdictions.
