Eagle Scout Ben Schrack presents flag-retirement box and QR guide to Sykesville
Summary
Eagle Scout Ben Schrack told the Sykesville council he installed a flag retirement box near the downtown pavilion, led cleanup and power-washing, collected about 30–37 flags and handed the keys over to the town; he also noted he and volunteers had to clear the work area during a protest.
At the April 27 Sykesville Mayor and Town Council meeting, Eagle Scout Ben Schrack presented his Eagle Scout project: installation of a flag retirement box near the downtown pavilion and cleanup of the surrounding area.
"I just recently completed my Eagle Scout project, which was installing the flag box..." Schrack said, describing the work to power-wash retaining walls and sidewalks, clean the parking lot, and install a QR code on the box linking to a website with flag-care guidance. He said roughly 30–37 flags were collected the first time the box was checked and that he officially handed the keys to the town.
Schrack told the council volunteers included about 25 adults and scouts and that the group encountered weather challenges and, at one point, a protest that required them to clear the area. The mayor and council thanked him, calling the project "very meaningful," and encouraged future coordination when the box needs emptying: the town can contact scouts, the fire department or other volunteer partners.
The council applauded the volunteer effort and discussed a possible ceremony and related outreach.
No formal action was required; the project was presented as a community-service update and the town accepted the handover of the box.
