Cook County accepts donated outdoor AED cabinet and AED for community center

Cook County commissioners voted unanimously to accept a donation from Arrowhead AED to install an outdoor automatic external defibrillator (AED) cabinet at the county community center.
A presenter representing Arrowhead AED described the cabinet’s features (temperature control to prevent freezing, theft/vandalism deterrents including camera monitoring, and a hardwired electrical connection) and noted that the nonprofit will cover the cabinet, the AED machine, and four years of the maintenance and data plan. County staff said the county would cover the required hardwired electrical hookup, installation labor and a small annual electricity cost estimated at about $25 per year after the four-year maintenance plan ends.
Commissioners asked about vandalism protection, whether the machine will alert 911 or preset phone numbers when opened, and the long-term maintenance plan. The presenter said the data plan supports alerts and immediate replacement/maintenance if the device is used; the nonprofit hopes to keep the program funded beyond four years.
The motion to accept the donation passed by voice vote with unanimous support.
What’s next: Staff will coordinate installation of the cabinet and electrical hookup at the community center and document maintenance responsibilities after the four-year period covered by Arrowhead AED.
