Ben Helberg sworn in as Cook County interim sheriff as Board honors outgoing Sheriff Pat Eliasson

Administrator Treble read a recognition highlighting Eliasson’s career: starting with the Grand Marais Police Department in 1995, later joining Cook County Sheriff's Office and serving as sheriff since 2015. The recognition cited reforms and initiatives during his tenure, including body-worn cameras, expanded training and interagency partnerships such as a regional marine unit.
Sheriff Eliasson addressed the board, thanked colleagues and the community and reflected on the privilege of public service. Commissioners thanked him for steady leadership and service.
Following the recognition, Chair administered the oath of office to Ben Helberg, who had served in the sheriff’s office since 2004 in roles from dispatcher to chief deputy. The chair noted Helberg’s operational experience and appointed him interim sheriff to serve until the elected sheriff assumes office in January 2027.
What’s next: The county will process the internal staffing transition as Ben Helberg assumes interim duties; commissioners noted a forthcoming appointment to fill a chief deputy vacancy.
