Lasos director outlines summer camp for ~400 kids and a credit‑recovery partnership with schools
Summary
Melinda, executive director of Lasos, told commissioners the nonprofit serves roughly 4,100 residents (about 2,700 in the town) and plans a summer camp for nearly 400 children July 6–30; she also described a partnership with Harford County Public Schools to offer a summer credit program to help a small cohort of students graduate on time.
Melinda, executive director of Lasos, told the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners that the organization has partnered with the town for about 16 years and currently reaches roughly 4,100 residents, about 2,700 of whom live inside the town limits. She described this summer’s programming and an education partnership intended to help students who need one credit to graduate.
"We currently are serving over 4,100 residents here local in the 21014," Melinda said, and later added that Lasos expects to serve almost 400 children in its July summer program. She said the organization is collaborating with Harford County Public Schools to provide a summer class for students who need credits to graduate on time — an initiative Melinda said the county does not widely offer and which Lasos believes can keep 15–16 students from falling behind.
Melinda also described ongoing partnerships with the Bel Air Police Department on community safety work, and programs focused on literacy and family financial stability. Commissioners thanked Lasos for the long‑standing partnership but did not act on any funding request at the session; the presentation was delivered as part of the FY27 budget work session and will be considered as staff and commissioners continue budget deliberations.
