Miss Washington (speaker 4) moved, citing policy BC, "I move that she be removed from her position as board secretary and chairman of the alternative pathways committee." Mr. Trapp (speaker 2) seconded the motion. The board approved the motion 6 yes, 1 no.
Dr. Elkins Scott (speaker 6) spoke at the dais in response, asserting her commitment to constituents and rejecting the move as personal retaliation: "I may be moved from my seat, but my voice will always be loud and clear for the people, for the students, for the teachers, and for the community." She noted her years of service and high vote totals while urging continued support for colleagues.
Public comment earlier in the meeting addressed governance and due process. A public commenter (speaker 7) argued that points of order were being misused to cut off members and asked what rule justified removing an officer, saying, "Once a member has been recognized by the chair, they have the right to speak without interruption." Glenda Wilder (speaker 8) also addressed the board during public comment, reading a poem about unity and raising a separate concern that a barcode-only sign-up for public comment could exclude older residents.
The board also scheduled a vote to select a new board secretary at the upcoming May 12 meeting and directed that nominations for that post be added to the May 12 agenda. The motion to remove the officer followed earlier executive-session votes and concluded the board's new-business discussion for the work session.
The board took the removal vote in public session after closing and reopening an executive session earlier in the evening; the board did not record additional sanctions or changes to committee assignments beyond the officer removals at that time.
