Billy Smith, the district's operations/finance facilities representative, asked the board to approve two facility-waiver requests at the April 22 meeting.
Smith said Lugoff First Baptist requested to use Blaney Elementary for its annual summer camp and that the recommended fee arrangement would charge $5,000 plus custodial services; Smith said the full, undiscounted rental and custodial total would be $15,519. He described the camp as a community program with local youth benefits and recommended approval of the discounted rental.
Smith also said Kappa Alpha requested a waiver of rental and custodial fees for a Workforce/skills event to be held at a district site; he said proof of liability insurance had arrived late and that Byron Johnson, the district's director of adult education, would oversee the event to ensure the facility is opened, closed and cleaned appropriately. "So, we are asking to waive the rental and the custodial fees, and that's what we would like to approve with your approval," Smith said.
Smith told the board both items would appear on the May 9 and Sept. 12 agendas for formal approval. The chair and board members expressed no objections at the meeting and the discussion moved on to other agenda items.
Why it matters: approving fee waivers reduces revenue to the student activity/rental accounts in the short term but can support community partnerships and programming. The board received the requests and was asked to consider formal approval at upcoming meetings.
