The Washington Elementary School District board unanimously approved a revised evaluation tool for instructional coaches March 26 after district staff said the prior instrument was designed for classroom teachers and did not capture coach-specific responsibilities.
Mister Morris told trustees the revision "reflects a thoughtful and necessary shift to better align evaluation practices with the unique responsibilities and impact of our instructional coaches," listing areas such as professional development, instructional leadership, data-driven coaching cycles and collaborative practices.
Board members asked whether instructional coaches could qualify for alternative evaluation status (APEC) used for highly performing teachers; Morris said he would take the question under advisement and follow up. Trustees agreed the new tool was more user friendly and appropriate for coaches.
The board approved implementing the revised instructional-coach evaluation tool for the 2026-27 school year.
Next steps: district HR and instructional leadership will implement the tool and clarify whether and how coaches may access alternative evaluation pathways.
