The Washington Elementary School District governing board voted unanimously March 26 to accept the district—s fiscal-year 2024-25 financial audit and USFR compliance questionnaire after an external auditor reported a clean opinion on the financial statements and federal programs but disclosed a material weakness related to the employee benefit trust.
Britney Williams of audit firm Heinfeld Meach told the board, "In our opinion, they are fairly stated," referring to the financial statements, and said the firm issued an unmodified opinion on the district—s major federal programs. Williams also told the board auditors "did have a material weakness over the financial statements this year" that related to the employee benefit trust and system and personnel changes.
Board members thanked the finance team for the work that supports district compliance. Several trustees noted that audit testing necessarily includes spot checks and that exceptions do not always indicate broader problems; Williams said any "difficulties encountered, disagreements with management, [or] fraud" would be included in the formal communication to governance. The auditor said management has already corrected issues related to the benefit-trust finding and is holding monthly reconciliation meetings to address the deficiency.
President Kyle Clayton moved to accept the audit and the compliance questionnaire for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025; the roll-call vote was 4—0 in favor. The board did not take additional formal action beyond acceptance; the auditor said the single-audit report and USFR compliance questionnaire were filed by the March 31 deadline.
Next steps: the board will receive routine updates from finance on implementation of corrective actions; no further formal board action on the audit finding was announced at the meeting.
