Deptford board approves tentative $106.1M 2026-27 budget with 2% tax levy increase

Carisa Rose, the district’s school business administrator and board secretary, presented the budget overview and said "the district is proposing a 2% tax levy increase, consistent with the statutory cap." Rose also disclosed that the general fund appropriations include a withdrawal from Capital Reserve — Excess Costs & Other Capital Projects — of $1,130,000 to fund other capital projects consistent with the district’s Long-Range Facilities Plan.
Kevin Kanauss, the superintendent, told the board that "adjustments to the State’s budget timeline by the Governor have resulted in delays to the district’s budget development process," a factor the administration said has affected timing for final budget actions.
The board approved the tentative budget on a bundled motion by Linda Rosser, seconded by Dan McCurdy. The budget package shown to the board lists total expenditures of $106,062,551, anticipated revenues of $54,183,318 and taxes to be raised of $51,879,233. The resolution also authorizes travel and related expense reimbursements in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:23A-7.3 to a maximum of $50,000 for the 2026–2027 budget year; Rose reported $13,670 had been expended against that cap to date.
The board voted to advertise the tentative budget in the South Jersey Times per State Department of Education guidance and scheduled a public hearing on April 28, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Deptford School District board room for public comment on the budget.
Also approved as part of the finance motion were the 2026–2027 Preschool Budget and the 2026–2027 Special Education Medicaid Initiative (SEMI) Action Plan. The bundled finance motion passed on a roll call vote of 8–0.
At the meeting’s close the board set the next procedural step: the public hearing on April 28, where residents can comment on the proposed levy and line-item appropriations.
