Nevada County rolls out Ready Nevada County campaign and ZoneHaven mapping tool

Nevada County officials and community volunteers opened a three‑day board workshop by urging residents to prepare now for wildfire season and other emergencies, and by launching a neighborhood mapping tool they say will help people know when to leave.
“Think of your go bag as the only resource you may have,” said a county preparedness presenter, summarizing guidance offered throughout the session. County staff described the Ready‑Set‑Go framework: ‘‘Ready’’ for home hardening and creating a 72‑hour go bag; ‘‘Set’’ when warnings arrive; and ‘‘Go’’ for an evacuation order.
County staff highlighted CodeRED and Nixle as opt‑in alert systems and introduced ZoneHaven — an online tool that gives each address a zone label so residents can quickly learn whether their area is being advised or ordered to evacuate. The speaker asked residents to visit community.zonehaven.com, enter their address and record their zone for use during an emergency.
Presenters and several residents also called attention to the needs of people with medical devices. “If you are someone with a disability … I have type 1 diabetes, I have an insulin pump,” a resident said, describing the need to plan for battery backups, inverters or substantial backup batteries for CPAPs, oxygen concentrators and other essential equipment.
County staff said ZoneHaven does not replace CodeRED or Nixle but supplements them: ZoneHaven shows which neighborhoods are being evacuated so residents can follow targeted evacuation instructions. Officials urged residents without internet access to learn their zone by word of mouth, radio or local outreach.
Looking ahead, county staff said ZoneHaven mapping will be integrated into public information and outreach; they encouraged the public to rehearse evacuation plans, maintain communication networks of neighbors and record special medical needs on planning lists so first responders and community volunteers can help when an event occurs.
The county also stressed that preparedness is a shared responsibility: officials asked residents to create defensible space and to use noncombustible materials and fine mesh vents to limit ember intrusion on homes.
The county’s Ready Nevada County outreach and ZoneHaven promotion are part of a broader public‑education campaign officials said is designed to reduce risks and speed evacuations when incidents occur. Staff urged residents to register for alerts and keep essential supplies on hand for at least 72 hours.
