Fitchburg proclaims May 2026 Building Safety Month, recognizes inspection and fire staff

At its April 28 meeting the Fitchburg Common Council proclaimed May 2026 as Building Safety Month, emphasizing the role of building and fire inspectors and the importance of modern codes and standards for occupant safety and disaster resilience.

The proclamation notes that building safety depends on "building inspectors, fire inspectors, engineers, architects, builders, tradespeople, design professionals, and others in the construction industry who work year round to ensure the safe construction of buildings." The proclamation calls on residents to "practice building safety and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Fitchburg's building inspection and fire inspection personnel." It is dated April 28, 2026.

Following the proclamation, a representative from the city's fire/inspection staff thanked the council, saying, "A lot of people don't understand all the professionals that go into putting a safe building together," and noted the range of professionals involved from architects to fire department staff and building inspectors.

The proclamation was ceremonial; no formal vote or policy change was recorded. City staff indicated there will be additional outreach and activities during Building Safety Month.
