Montevallo Council approves bills, receives routine police, fire and community reports
Summary
Council members present unanimously approved a motion to pay the bills and entered monthly police and fire reports into the record; councilors also heard updates on recycling, youth athletics and Chamber events and took several public comments.
At the April 13 meeting in Montevallo, Council Member Kenneth Dukes moved and Council Member David King seconded a motion to pay the city’s bills; the motion passed unanimously with the three council members present voting 'All Ayes.' Mayor Pro Tem King presided; Mayor Rusty Nix and two council members were absent, and the record notes the lack of a quorum prevented further new-business actions.
During the preceding 5:30 p.m. work session, Police Chief Burr reported 88 incident reports for March and 285 total reports year-to-date; Fire Chief Davis reported 141 calls for March and 404 total calls year-to-date. In appendix material entered into the record, the police summary breaks down arrests, citations and incident types; the fire report lists response types and counts by month.
Kirk Hamby, Director of Public Works, told the council that the Recycling Center hauled 21.4 tons during the most recent Free Dump Day. Council Member Alyssa Green read a written recreation report from Youth Athletics Director Sydney Baugh outlining recent youth tournaments, upcoming registration for football and cheer, travel-ball activity and growing senior-center participation. Adele Nelson of the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce summarized upcoming Chamber events including an April 15 education-appreciation luncheon, walking tours on April 18 and 25, and co-hosting the Shelby County Small Business Awards Luncheon on May 20.
In the public-comment portion of the meeting, Jay Welborn spoke about his candidacy for District Court Judge, Place 3; Kathy King described a Shoal Creek Park Foundation marker project and kiosks being constructed by Shelby County for cemetery visitors; Veronica Bailey invited residents to a Montevallo Community Chorale concert on April 21; and Chris Henry raised neighborhood speeding concerns on Roberts and Gardner streets and asked the council to consider traffic-calming options.
The meeting record lists no new board appointments or other business and shows Mayor Pro Tem King adjourned the meeting at 6:27 p.m.
