The Glendale Transportation and Parking Commission on April 27 voted to note and file an informational report that outlines a pilot program to test modified speed humps and speed tables in corridors where existing neighborhood traffic-calming devices are ineffective.
Staff described the pilot as an evaluation of longer, staggered-profile speed humps and flat-top speed tables designed for wider streets and higher-speed corridors (examples cited included East Glen Oaks Boulevard, Chevy Chase Drive and portions of South Verdugo Road). Staff estimated a planning-level cost of about $25,000 per location and said any pilot installation would continue to require coordination with Glendale Police and Glendale Fire and that the existing NTCP petition or outreach process would normally apply.
Commissioners discussed whether to treat the pilot like a usual NTCP petition-driven installation or to expedite it using prior outreach results in canyon corridors. Staff said they preferred to follow the NTCP petition approach unless the Commission specifically advised a faster path; commissioners suggested using recent Glen Oaks Canyon outreach results to identify pilot candidates quickly.
The Commission voted to receive and file the informational report; staff will return with petition details, specific candidate locations and a recommendation if the pilot performs well.
