During the public-comment period at the April 28 meeting, Virginia Campos addressed the board to describe ongoing bullying of her son, Mateo, and asked the district for immediate assistance.
"He was recorded in the bathroom," Campos said, adding that photos and video were shared without her son's consent and that multiple students had participated in harassment, including throwing deodorant in his face. She said the family had reported the incidents to school staff and administrators more than three months earlier and that the harassment had not stopped.
Board members curtailed her time per the public-comment rules but acknowledged the seriousness of the claim. Vice President Irvin and other board members asked staff to follow up. In the superintendent's report, Superintendent Dr. Funtjest said the district would continue to work with Campos and her family "to see how we can be bringing the best resolve to the situation and continue to support your son." He said the district would be in contact with the family.
The board's procedural officers reminded speakers that comments are limited to three minutes and that board members do not respond during public comment. The district did not announce a specific follow-up timeline in the meeting minutes; administration indicated it would contact the family directly.
