Council postpones data-center ordinance discussion, asks staff to form work group

Council postponed a discussion on a proposed data center ordinance and directed staff and council members to form a research work group.
Councilmember Kearns, who requested the item, said the issue is new to many members and recommended a work group to examine water usage, power demand, noise, setbacks and other utility and environmental factors before substantive council deliberation. "I would suggest we put together a work group to do a little research," Kearns said.
Planning staff advised that the proposed project would fall under M-3 industrial zoning and that municipal zoning code imposes specific conditions for development in that district. A staff member offered to participate in the work group.
Council members pointed to recent, highly attended meetings in other states where residents raised concerns about data centers' effects on power and water infrastructure and asked that Grow Clinton and other stakeholders be involved in fact-finding. The council placed a May 12 placeholder to revisit the matter after the work group reports back.
