Rancho Palos Verdes to launch AM 1680 emergency radio; city invites naming contest

The city of Rancho Palos Verdes plans to launch an AM emergency radio station on frequency AM 1680 as an additional channel for emergency information, Mayor Paul Seo said.
Seo said the finance advisory committee and the Infrastructure Management Advisory Committee (IMAAC) researched the project and helped secure an MOU with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District to get the station running. "AM 1680 is our radio station," Seo said during the April 22 mayoral update. He emphasized the importance of broadcast capability in emergencies because radio can be received in cars and on handheld receivers.
To promote public recognition, the city will hold a naming contest and invite residents to submit suggestions; city information and contest details will be posted at rpvc8.gov. Seo said the station will be an extra layer of emergency communication, not a replacement for other channels.
What happens next: the city will finalize necessary agreements, promote the naming contest to residents and continue preparations to bring AM 1680 online for emergency use.
