South Texas College to launch avionics program after $50,000 county contribution

Olivia Gomez, director of external affairs for South Texas College, told the court the county’s $50,000 contribution will help the college purchase equipment required to launch the program at the airport campus and to support labs and curriculum. President Solis (speaker 27) said the program will accept high‑school and adult learners and aims to begin instruction this fall.
Commissioners noted the region’s need for workforce pathways and thanked state representatives and local partners for helping secure space and collaboration with local airports. Commissioner David Fuentes, who was identified as having played a role in advancing the program, expressed strong support.
What’s next: College officials said they will continue equipment purchases and program planning and will coordinate with county staff on implementation and reporting on student enrollment and outcomes.
