Hidalgo County commissioners approve grants, contracts and equipment purchases

Hidalgo County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved a slate of routine and contract items, including grant applications, construction payments, professional services agreements and equipment purchases.
The court approved an application payment of $2,590,608.11 to Econ Group related to ongoing construction contracts and accepted multiple construction‑related payments and closing documents for 2018 drainage projects. The court also approved a construction material testing (CMT) services award to BDZ Engineer LLC for East Mercedes drain‑ditch improvements; the award was approved subject to final legal review.
In procurement items, the purchasing office obtained court approval for the purchase of John Deere equipment — including model tractors and mower units — for a total staff‑recommended amount of $450,500. The court granted a bidding exception under the Texas Local Government Code for procurement of certain professional services and approved a consulting agreement brought forward by the purchasing director for transportation and capital projects.
Health and safety items approved included an overtime agreement of $22,155.25 between the Homeland Security Task Force and the county task force, authorization to apply for a rifle‑resistant body‑armor grant for Constable Precinct 1, and multiple Lone Star/OHS grant application authorizations for constable offices.
The court also accepted a donation of caliche from Perales Pit LLC valued at $4,806.39 for roadwork in Precinct 4, and accepted a Farmers Insurance settlement check of $7,557.89 to resolve an auto‑accident claim involving a county vehicle. Community Service Agency staff reported and the court accepted an amendment to a Texas Veterans Commission grant that adds $150,000 for operations.
County staff explained that several items were handled on the consent agenda and that a small correction to a consent line item changed an amount to $80,558.97 for the official record; the court approved the correction.
The meeting closed with scheduling notes: the court reconvenes next on Feb. 3 for a morning session.
The approvals were routine and mostly noncontroversial; where contracts or grants require further legal review, the court noted documents would be executed pending final counsel review.
