Hidalgo County proclaims January 2026 Human Trafficking Prevention and Mental Wellness months

The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court adopted two proclamations on Jan. 12: one recognizing January 2026 as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and another recognizing January 2026 as Mental Wellness Month.
The human‑trafficking proclamation highlighted local and regional response efforts and acknowledged the Rio Grande Valley Anti Human Trafficking Task Force and the Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. Charmaine Brooks, medical liaison for the task force, thanked the court and described coordinated training and victim‑centered response work in the region.
The mental‑wellness proclamation cited national and state statistics on mental health, encouraged public‑ and private‑sector participation to expand services, and included remarks from Liana Gutierrez of NAMI South Texas RGV and a representative of the Children’s Bereavement Center about stigma reduction, prevention and services for youth.
Both proclamations were approved by voice vote and the court expressed its support for awareness and partner programs in the county.
