Harris County approves official canvas for Jan. 31 Congressional District 18 runoff

Harris County Commissioners Court voted Tuesday to approve the official canvas for the Jan. 31 special runoff election in Congressional District 18.
County Clerk Tanisha Hudson asked the court to adopt the final results and said, “All final results, including provisionals and all ballots, have been included in this final count.” Hudson said commissioners each had an envelope with a breakdown of the results and a thumb drive with the data.
The motion to adopt the canvas was offered on the floor and recorded as moved by Commissioner Breanna Smoots and seconded by Commissioner Ramsey. The court recorded “three ayes and no nays,” and the item passed. The clerk did not report individual vote names during the roll call; the official tally was 3–0 in favor.
Earlier in the meeting Jacob Clementich, the lone public commenter, praised Hudson’s handling of the elections and urged the commission to proceed with canvassing. No other public speakers addressed the court.
Hudson also noted that preparations are underway for early voting beginning next week and thanked staff for their work. The court recessed at 10:02 a.m. and said it will reconvene Thursday.
The special meeting’s action completes the county’s formal step of certifying the Jan. 31 runoff results before any further procedural or election-contest processes that may follow.
