Sharpstown Parks Alliance honored by Harris County; officials tout trail and park investments

Harris County Commissioners Court on March 4 recognized the Sharpstown Parks Alliance (SPA) and heard remarks from local volunteers and former officials about a decade of parks advocacy and recent investments.
"SPA was founded 10 years ago by a group of citizens from the Sharpstown area who recognize that parks are vitally important to our communities," said Bill Saint Cyr, speaking on behalf of the alliance. He thanked past and current commissioners and neighborhood volunteers for sustaining the organization.
Mike Laster, a former District J council member, described efforts to invest in city and county parks in District J and credited collaboration among elected officials for improvements. A county official said the trail project in Sharpstown is about 1.8 miles long and creates safer connections to three community centers, five libraries, 21 schools, 15 parks and about 30 metro bus stops; officials invited the public to an Earth Day plant swap and anniversary events.
The court accepted the recognition during the public-comment period. No specific new county funding or formal park approvals were recorded in the meeting transcript.
