The Waynesville council approved $18,000 on April 28 to relocate sand volleyball courts to Recreation Park as part of a dog-park construction effort that required the courts to be moved.
Staff said contractor Ben Blair offered to donate his time and equipment and later submitted a signed proposal for about $18,000 to perform the work. "He'd be glad to donate my time and equipment to do this for you," staff reported about Blair's offer. Council also noted a $12,000 in-kind labor contribution from Southern Appalachian Grading (described in the meeting as a donation), and several members praised community partnership and volunteerism.
A motion to approve $18,000 to Southern Appalachian Grading and Excavating for the relocation and to authorize internal fund transfers within the recreation budget passed on a voice vote. Staff said the work will shorten downtime for the courts, and that fencing and rules signage for the new dog park will follow as contractors complete the remaining tasks.
Council indicated it would thank and recognize Ben Blair and community partners in a future agenda item.
