Board approves personnel, education and budget items; facilities vote draws opposition on one item

At its April 29 meeting the Middlesex Borough School District Board of Education voted to approve a slate of routine personnel, education and policy actions and advanced facilities and finance items connected to the coming budget.
Superintendent-recommended personnel actions (agenda items 9.01–9.13) were presented by the personnel committee chair and moved and seconded. During roll call several trustees recorded recusals or abstentions on specific subitems; the board discussed the procedure for naming an individual when abstaining from voting on an identified person. The motion to approve the package, with the recorded recusals and individual ‘no’ votes noted in the meeting minutes, was carried.
Education action items 11.01–11.15 and policy action items 12.01–12.04 were presented and approved on voice/roll-call motions as recorded on the agenda.
Facilities and finance action items 14.01–14.19 were considered together. Committee members noted the budget-related materials in the package and some trustees asked for clarification about year-to-year comparisons in financial worksheets. The board approved the full set, but item 14.18 drew explicit opposition from multiple trustees (recorded as “no” votes during roll call). The transcript shows at least two named board members voting “no” on 14.18 while voting “yes” on the remaining items.
Board leaders said additional budget detail had been presented in March and that the total proposed budget increase being advertised is 7.06 percent. The board also noted that capital reserve uses and next-year capital appropriations (including roof and auditorium work) are included in the advertised budget for 2026–27.
After approving the agenda items, the board opened a public-comment period, addressed routine questions and announced a move to executive session to discuss attorney–client privileged matters and a confidential student matter.
