Preschool owner says construction to finish May 21; temporary CO expected May 31
Summary
Beth Spencer told the board her preschool extension is near completion: contractors expect sidewalks, awnings, sprinkler piping and interior finishes done by May 21, with a temporary certificate of occupancy planned for May 31; she said a $200,000 COVID grant funded fencing, AstroTurf and playground equipment.
Beth (Elizabeth) Spencer, who described herself as representing the local preschool extension, told the Middlesex Borough Board of Education on April 27 that construction work is nearing completion and she expects the site to be usable by the end of May.
"We're in the process of, right now, completing the sidewalks, the awnings, grading the playground, and some a little more piping for the sprinkler system," Spencer said, and added contractors told her those items would be finished "no later than May 21." She said interior finishing work — electrical, plumbing, painting, flooring and doors — would be completed simultaneously.
Spencer said she received a COVID grant and used $200,000 "for health and safety," including a new fence that will enclose the playground, AstroTurf and playground equipment. She said, after finishing outside work and planting, the program plans to seek a temporary certificate of occupancy and anticipated applying for that on May 31.
Spencer told the board she has completed required inspections and has been recruiting teachers, including outreach to retirees, and has developed lesson‑plan templates to standardize instruction for teachers with varying experience. "I've been doing that since September," she said of building the curriculum.
Board members thanked Spencer for the update. No board action was taken during the report; Spencer invited parents and board members to contact her with questions.
