Board approves interlocal transferring administration building deed to city for $1 million contribution

The School City of East Chicago board on April 28 voted to approve an interlocal agreement with the city that would transfer the deed for the Administration Building to the city in exchange for a $1,000,000 city contribution toward building work.
"This building has reached the end of its useful life," the board's attorney said while summarizing the interlocal. The agreement includes a $1,000,000 contribution from the city in exchange for the transfer of the deed; the attorney said the interlocal is intended to memorialize cooperative steps that already exist in a separate shared-facilities MOU.
Trustees asked for a brief summary and then approved the agreement by roll call; one trustee voted no (Trustee Gibson King). The attorney recommended approval and described the interlocal as the second step following an earlier board resolution authorizing staff to pursue the agreement.
The administration said the interlocal will preserve cooperation with the city on shared facilities and that more details will be carried out in implementation steps.
