The School City of East Chicago board on April 28 voted to waive $2,331,962.18 in outstanding textbook and curriculum-material fees that had accumulated across multiple years.
Finance staff told trustees these balances were carried when the district previously managed a textbook fund; state changes rolled that funding into the basic grant and left legacy balances on the books. "This goes over quite a few school years," the business office said, noting the balances had been tracked historically and that clearing them would clean up district accounting now that the state has changed how curriculum materials are funded.
Trustees asked about the time frame and whether this represented a loss; district finance staff answered that the write-off is an accounting clean-up and is not a direct cash loss because of earlier state reimbursements and changes to the grant structure.
The board approved the waiver by roll call.
Administration said the item was brought to clear longstanding ledger items in light of state policy changes and would allow the district to reconcile books going forward.
