U.S. Army Corps offers $100,000 federally funded start to Big Sioux flood-mitigation study

The Union County Board of Commissioners received a presentation from Jennifer Gitt of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Omaha District) on April 28 in response to the county’s request for a feasibility study into Big Sioux flood mitigation.
Gitt said the Corps has $100,000 available, funded at 100% by the federal government, to start the 45-day Federal Interest Determination Phase and to develop a Federal Cost Share Agreement. That initial phase will determine whether the Corps has sufficient federal interest to proceed to a full feasibility study.
The presentation followed the county’s written request for a general investigation feasibility study; the minutes record that the Corps described the initial funding and next steps but do not include a timetable beyond the 45-day phase or any commitment to construction funding.
Commissioners accepted the presentation; no formal vote to enter into a cost-share agreement appears in the minutes. The board’s next procedural steps will depend on the outcome of the Corps’ Federal Interest Determination.
