Commissioners consider options after board of education says Pine Hall Elementary is surplus

The Board of Commissioners discussed the future of the former Pine Hall Elementary property after being informed the school board has determined the property is no longer needed for educational purposes.
Commissioner Jeff said the school board indicated it could offer the property back to the county, possibly for a nominal fee, depending on legal authority. County Attorney Jennifer referenced the statute governing surplus school property, saying the board of education must offer the property to county commissioners “at a fair market price or a price negotiated between the two boards.”
Several commissioners recalled the Francisco disposition, where the county engaged the community and structured a transfer with development obligations and a grant program to prevent undesirable uses. Commissioners asked staff to contact Pine Hall community representatives (one contact, Jason Duncan, was already known to the county), to publicize the discussion and to bring community input back to the board before making a decision.
No formal decision was made; the board agreed to advertise the issue, seek public comment and return the item to the next meeting for further action.
