Three Village board reviews potential sale, reuse of district properties; no imminent action
Summary
Superintendent Dr. Scanlon told the board the district is exploring options for several parcels — including a 5-acre Nichols Road lot attached to the old administration building, an 18-acre Hawkins Road parcel and a 2-acre North Country site — but any sale would require public bids and a board vote.
The Three Village Central School District on April 29 updated the public on several parcels the board is examining for potential reuse or sale, saying no decisions are imminent and any change would follow a public bid process and board approval.
Dr. Scanlon said the district is working with legal counsel to split and market a roughly 5-acre portion of the Nichols Road property that is attached to the old Nichols Road administration building and confirmed that parcel “is for sale.” He also described a 2-acre North Country parcel along Route 258 the district is considering selling and an 18-acre Hawkins Road property that is listed for lease and could be preserved, repurposed for education or discussed with town and county partners.
“Just so we’re clear, any of these properties still have to go for bid,” Dr. Scanlon said, adding that the district is using a real-estate broker and will obtain independent assessments to inform any recommendation. “The board legally is not allowed to do back‑room deals… it has to be something the public would be absolutely aware of.”
Board members and residents asked whether the district had received offers for lease or purchase. Dr. Scanlon said there have been no offers for lease on Nichols Road or the Hawkins Road parcel and emphasized that municipal properties typically do not sell quickly.
Board members stressed that the board can reject offers and that the community will be notified in any public bid process. A meeting participant raised social‑media rumors of back‑room deals; the board responded that all sales would be discussed in open session and require a vote.
The district also noted space constraints: any reuse of the North Country or Nichols Road sites would need to accommodate the Three Village Academy and current administrative staff or provide relocation plans. Dr. Scanlon further flagged possible future enrollment changes tied to statewide pre‑K policy that could change space needs.
Next steps: the administration will continue assessments and legal work and bring any specific sale or lease recommendation to a future open‑session board meeting for public notice and a vote.
