The Board of Public Works and Safety approved a purchase agreement for 128 Bach Street, the former Sacred Heart Church, to advance an Advantix affordable housing development.
Craig Phillips told the board the city has a signed agreement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gary and that purchase costs include an earnest-money deposit plus $70,000 for reconstruction of a storage building. "On that site, 12 townhomes," Phillips said, describing the site as one of three in the planned development. Phillips said the purchase will be funded in part with a grant received from the Health Foundation.
The board moved and approved the purchase by voice vote. Phillips said the Washington School site in the same program will yield roughly 16–17 units and the Scott Field site about 13 cottage‑style single‑family homes; Scott Field will retain playground equipment.
The purchase moves the city closer to preparing all three sites for construction; Phillips said staff will proceed with the next steps required to prepare the project sites. The board did not record a roll‑call vote in the transcript; the motion passed by voice approval at the meeting.
The next procedural step, Phillips said, will be final closing and subsequent site‑preparation work tied to the grant funding and development schedule.
