Vernon board to open talks with town on ad hoc task force to examine legal options over state school funding

Board members debated a proposal to open discussions with the Vernon town council about forming a joint ad hoc task force to investigate whether legal or other remedies could address what some members described as a misallocation of state and federal school funding under existing law.

"What I'm proposing is that we, as a board of education, approach the town on an official basis and propose to them that we form a joint task force whose responsibility it would be to investigate whether or not it would be feasible to pursue this federal lawsuit," one board member said during the meeting. The speaker framed the idea as a long-term, coalition-based examination rather than an immediate step to file suit.

Other board members raised concerns about risks and costs: one member warned that early public challenges can lead to state pushback or funding consequences and noted the high cost of prolonged litigation. The president clarified the board was not voting to file a lawsuit that night and emphasized the task force would examine options and report back to the board.

Members agreed to open talks with the town. The president said he would start outreach and invited volunteers for the ad hoc committee; two board members volunteered to serve. Board staff said legal feasibility and cost would be researched and that any subsequent recommendation to pursue litigation would require separate board action and likely coalition partners.

The board’s decision to begin exploratory talks does not obligate the district to file litigation; it authorizes fact-finding and intermunicipal discussions to determine whether a coordinated approach has merit.

Next steps: the president will contact the town council to seek its willingness to participate; the ad hoc committee will gather information and return findings to the board for any future decision.
