Planning staff announces April 30 special council workshop and general plan outreach

Planner Schmidt told the commission on April 28 that the City Council will hold a special strategic planning workshop Thursday, April 30 at 4:30 p.m. at the Monday Club to present results from recent community listening meetings and draft priorities. Schmidt said the workshop will not be televised because it is a staff-and-council working session but invited the public to attend and hear the results.
Schmidt said staff will soon begin public meetings on the general plan and the housing element with a consultant and that meeting dates and materials will be posted on the city website. He described the strategic plan as a long-term planning document that staff will use to set department priorities and performance evaluations, and he said the plan will be tracked through annual reports to the council.
Commissioner Christiansen emphasized the need for the general plan update and housing element work to account for new state housing laws to avoid noncompliance. Schmidt agreed, saying parts of the city’s general plan and housing element are out of date and that staff is working to avoid fines from the California Department of Housing and Community Development; he said a draft strategic plan will be reviewed internally and the council may adopt the general plan amendments in the coming months.
Staff encouraged public involvement in upcoming meetings and said further details and schedules will be posted on the city website.
